TikTok has become an essential platform for healthcare, allowing companies to raise disease awareness,
educate, and connect authentically with younger demographics through creative, compliant storytelling.
With its unique algorithm and ability to foster organic engagement, TikTok even enabled conditions like
mental health, diabetes, and rare disease to be effectively addressed.

Should the proposed TikTok ban go into effect, the approx. 170MM US users who spend an average of 38
hours on the app per month will have more limited access to the app, and ultimately eventual deterioration of the experience within it will have more limited access to the app, and ultimately eventual deterioration of the experience within it.

This will be a disruption to the social landscape as we know it.

Implications of the Ban for Pharmaceutical Marketers

While we don’t know exactly what challenges will be posed by a TikTok ban, to AdWeek, “those who aren’t preparing for the likelihood that the app will cease or sell its US operations are already a step behind.”

A ban will disrupt the social channel, with an anticipated ripple effect on other platforms. However, it also
opens opportunities to innovate and diversify strategies.

Less Inventory ➔ Increased Competition and Demand ➔ Increased Cost

eMarketer data shows social CPMs are already on the rise. As brands and influencers migrate from TikTok, competition on other platforms will intensify, potentially leading to even higher advertising costs and the need for more sophisticated marketing strategies.

Budget Reallocation Focused on Applying Learned Success to Other Platforms

Should a ban occur, advertisers will need to redistribute TikTok budgets across other platforms to maintain a similarly effective digital presence. Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Snapchat Spotlight are strong candidates, as they offer similar short-form video capabilities and are here to stay. While TikTok is pushing its users to download its sister app Lemon8, we caution it – its future in the US is also in jeopardy.

With reallocation to other social platforms, advertisers will also need to account for the previously mentioned potential CPM increases.

Adapt Content Strategies

Social strategy must connect content and context. Each platform has its unique dynamics, specs, and user base, requiring marketers to tailor their content and strategy accordingly to ensure the context and placement of the content align for optimal effectiveness.

In fact, the ban could serve as a catalyst for pharmaceutical marketers to explore new content formats and storytelling techniques. While short-form videos have proven to be highly effective, as evidenced by TikTok’s success, other formats, such as interactive content, podcasts, and live streaming, offer additional avenues for quality engagement.

By diversifying content strategies, marketers can mitigate the impact of the TikTok ban and continue to connect with their audiences in meaningful ways.

Conclusion: Embracing Change and Innovation

The key to success lies in embracing change and leveraging new opportunities. By adapting to new platforms and exploring diverse content formats, marketers can navigate this transition and continue to engage with their audiences effectively.

In the immediate future, we are here to help seamlessly migrate TikTok campaigns to Shorts or Reels, which we believe will be an effective alternative. We also have creative solutions to leverage the success of TikTok ad formats in other channels.

Looking ahead, we will have a keen eye out for the future impact on industry innovation (think: platform enhancements, new platforms).

By staying agile and proactive, we will ensure we continue to engage with healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers to effectively deliver critical health information in a compliant, impactful manner.

We are ready for impact. Are you? Let’s talk!
